VR Star Wars Jedi simulator

Saber Thing VR Tech Demo is a tech demo for a VR game by Dan Shimmyo. The game simulates plasma sword mechanics, much like wielding light sabers in Lightsaber Training VR. It features impressive plasma sword physics and even has force mechanics, just like in Star Wars.

As a demo, Saber Thing VR Tech Demo is yet to have a story or enemies to fight against. Players are restricted to a small area where they can use the plasma sword to cut through different objects and use the force to either grab or push away sliced-up pieces.

Impressive physics

Developer Dan Shimmyo has expressed interest in creating a game centered on wielding a plasma sword, and Saber Thing VR Tech Demo does a great job of showcasing what a game like that would feel like. There are already officially licensed VR games that feature lightsaber combat but none of them has the physics that are as impressive as what is showcased in this demo.

The graphics don’t look amazing, but that’s to be expected given that the demo primarily showcases the plasma sword mechanics. A visual highlight, however, is the molten effect in objects when you slice through them using the plasma sword. The sound effects complement this visual effect well, making the swordplay extremely satisfying despite the lack of actual combat or enemies to engage with.

What makes this demo’s physics standout is how every object can be cut up in any way you want. The objects don't have predetermined stages of fragmentation, the number of slices and the shape of each fragment are entirely dependent on how you sliced them with the plasma sword. All things considered, it’s still just a tech demo and offers no real playthrough.

A fun demo

In a nutshell, Saber Thing VR Tech Demo is a teaser for a potential lightsaber game with impressive physics. It’s graphically basic but the visual and sound effects work well in highlighting the plasma sword physics. The gameplay boils down to slicing up objects and playing around with its force mechanics. All things considered, it’s a fun demo that you’ll enjoy regardless if you’re a Star Wars fan or not.
